John Batchelor Memorial Church (Usu church)

In 1937, a beautiful church was built to commemorate the achievements of John Batchelor, a British missionary who devoted his life to improving the status of the Ainu people. The church, made of volcanic rocks, stands on a place called "Kamui Takkopu" in the Ainu language, meaning "hill of the gods." Since 2022, the church has been illuminated, offering a mystical sight of the church floating above the hill. The museum on the second floor is open only on Saturdays from April to October, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and admission is free.
